An observation area was established on a plot of land artificially denuded in a field on reclaimed land of Tokyo Bay treated with soil dresssing seven years ago. A plant community in the early stage of secondary succession has been observed there for 17 years. For the first three years after denudation, the plants that formed a plant community in the plot changed gradually from annual to perennial herbaceous plants, and a tree began to blossom and fructificate in the eleventh year. The characteristics of the dominant species in each succession stage were observed and investigated. The dominant species in the herbaceous plant community formed by buried seeds has heavy seeds. These seeds did not germinate immediately after fructification and could not grow in low light. The seeds of dominant species in herbaceous plants distributed by winds did not germinate immediately after fructification and could not grow in low light. The seeds of dominant species in a woody plant community and carried by birds had heavy seeds, germinated immediately after fructification in highly moist soil, and could grow in low-light conditions.
