Effect of hormone-type herbicides on the ethylene production of mung bean hypocotyl sections.

To investigate the modes of actions of hormone-type herbicides, activities of these compounds for inducing ethylene production and promoting elongation of mung bean hypocotyl sections (slit test) were compared. IAA, NAA, 2, 4-D and dicamba induced ethylene production while quinclorac did not. But the activity of quinclorac for promoting hypocotyl elongation was comparable to that of IAA. Fenac, though it has been classified as a hormone type herbicide, neither induced ethylene production nor promoted hypocotyl elongation. These results suggest that different modes of actions may exist among herbicides which have been classified as hormone-type.
