The growth response to phosphorus and aluminum concentrations was compared among four Rumex species, i. e., Rumex conglomerates MURR., R. crispus L., R. japonicus HOUTT. and R. obtusifolius L., The results were as follows:1) The four species were grown at 4 levels of phosphorus in soil. All the species tested showed very limited growth without P addition, and responded well to P addition (Fig. 1). Dry matter yield under low P conditions was in the following order: R. japonicus>R. obtusifolius>R. conglomeratus>R. crispus (Figs. 1, 4).2) Although R. crispus showed the smallest T/R ratio (Fig. 2), the rate of lateral root and total root length of this plant was the lowest among the four species (Fig. 4). The shorter root length of R. crispus was considered to be the cause of the decrease of the tolerance to low-P concentration.3) The four species were grown in a solution culture containing 20ppm aluminum. Total dry weight of R. obtusifolius was significantly higher than that of the other plants (Table 1).4) Phosphorus deficiency and aluminum toxicity are often serious problems in the grasslands of Japan. Under such soil conditions, R. obtusifolius, which is more tolerant to low P and high Al concentrations, is assumed to grow better than R. crispus.
