We previously reported that Phalaris arundinacea L. inhibits the growth of Rumex obtusifolius L. (part I). In this report, the mechanism of the inhibitory effect was compared with that of other forage species, under two different conditions, establishment from seed and regrowth of adult plant.1. A significant amount of litter and root mat was found in grasslands where P. arundinacea had been a dominant species for several years (Fig. 4). Under wet conditions, many seedlings of R. obtusifolius were found in the L (litter) plot. Moreover, the germination percentage for the L+R (root mat) plot was higher than that for the L plot (Fig. 3). However, when the seedlings of R. obtusifolius emerged after mowing, they were shaded and suppressed by the leaf canopy of P. arundinacea and could not survive.2. Low light intensity on the ground surface inhibited the germination of R. obtusifolius. In the early stage of grassland establishment, both P. arundinacea and Dactylis glomerata L. were able to inhibit the germination and seedling growth of R. obtusifolius (Fig. 1). But in the late stage, this ability was loaf in areas where D. glomerata was dominant due to its abundant bunch formation. The site with the light conditions suitable for the growth of R. obtusifolius accounted for 42% of the total area (Fig. 2).3. In the P. arundinacea grassland, basal coverage and number of stems were larger and the stems were more homogeneously distributed as compared with the D. glomerata grassland of the same age (Table 1). When R. obtusifolius was mowed, P. arundinacea invaded the R. obtusifolius habitat, and it occupied the space with its leaf canopy, outpacing the regrowth of R. obtusifolius.
