The selective mode of action of simetryn [2, 4-bis(ethylamino)-6-methylthio-s-triazine] among rice cultivars was studied. Nihonbare, a japonica-type cultivar, was found more tolerant than IR-8, an indica-type, and Yushin, a hybrid of indica- and japonica-types.In an attempt to clarify the selective mechanism, the herbicide's absorption, translocation and metabolism in plants were investigated. The rate of absorption of 14C-simetryn by roots was determined higher in Nihonbare than in the others. Little difference among the cultivars was found in translocation from roots to shoots. A metabolism study that the rates of dissipation of applied simetryn in plant tissues were remarkably different, greater in Nihonbare and less in Yushin and IR-8. A major factor determining the simetryn selectivity among the cultivars may be found in their differential rates of metabolism.
