Several symptoms of MCPA injury to rice plants were morphologically investigated. They were reduction of tillering, production of tubular and dwarfed leaves, death of leaves and aberrant root formation. The reduction of tillering of rice plants by MCPA treatments was caused by undevelopment of the several buds on each shoot, which had been expected to develop successively after treatment. Tubular leaves occurred at about four-leaf stage later, after the herbicide treated. The leaves, which had expanded completely, or being expanded, at time of treatment, were rolled, yellowed and burned. The decrease of leaf length was found on several new leaves on each shoot, which elongated after treatment. Excessive numbers of undeveloping root primordia and short and aberrant roots were found on several shoot units from which new roots formed after treatment.Except tubular leaf formation, which was the more as temperature was the lower, the injurious effects of MCPA on rice plants were the severer, as temperature was the higher, or as the treated chemical was the more.
