Electrodeposited palladium films were obtained by the use of the direct current and pulsed current electrolysis in ethylenediamine-palladium (II) complex solutions. The effects of electrolysis parameter on the current efficiency, hydrogen content and morphology of palladium deposits were investigated under varying conditions of electrolysis. Direct current electrolysis, increases in current density resulted in a black, dusty deposit reduced current efficiency and higher hydrogen content. The adoption of pulsed current electrolysis made it possible to obtain smooth deposits of fine grain and to lower the hydrogen content markedly. This behavior is thought to be due to the fact that the pulsed current density (Ip) and off-time (Toff) have a considerable affect on the deposits. The fine grain deposits were obtained by inducing a large overpotential as a result of increasing Ip. It would seem that the smooth deposits were due to the occurrence of Toff, which had the effect of depressing the concentration polarization on account of the mass transport of metal ions on electrode surface. In addition, it is thought that the hydrogen is removed from the deposits during Toff.
