The limiting current densities (ilim) were measured for diluted solutions of CuSO4, ZnCl2, NiSO4, Na2SO4, NH4Cl, and NaCl in ion-exchange membrane electrodialysis cells. They were propotional to the electrolyte concentration. Particularly, with the cation exchange membrane in the mixed solution of NH4Cl and ZnCl2 ilim showed a linear relationship with [NH4+]/[Zn2+] ratio. From the relationship between ilim and the diffusion co-efficient of ions, it was found that the thickness of diffusion layer on the membranes was almost independent of the kinds of the electrolytes. The thickness of diffusion layer on the cation exchange membrane was thinner than that on the anion exchange membrane. Limiting current densities obtained experimentally agreed well with the values estimated by using Nernst-Planck's equation.
