Four cases of olfactory disorder caused by short exposures to organic solvents are reported. Case 1 was exposed to 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, and Case 2, 3, 4 to mixture vapor of isopropyl alcohol, xylene, n-hexane and toluene. All cases initially complained of nasal pain, but the symptom disappeared by the first visit for us except one case.X-ray and endoscopic examinations revealed no abnormalities in the olfactory clefts. T & T olfactory acuity test indicated hyposmia in all cases. It is considered that the patients were affected olfactory nerve function including the olfactory receptor site, because of the highly effective fat-solvent properties of organic solvents. Three of the four cases could not make a complete recovery.
