The efficiency of metal cutting operation is very often determined by the control of chip form. So, the relation between the chip form and cutting conditions must be explained not only from the practical experiences but also by theoretical study. In this paper, this relation is studied analytically, and following basic rules are obtained:<BR>(1) Chip form has a wide adaptability to meet the change of external and internal forces sensitively. This is the reason why chip is very unstable in its form.<BR>(2) Constant form chip makes a screw surface which has the rake face of tool as a tangential plane and the line of tool-chip separation as a generation line.<BR>(3) The radius, pitch and the inclination and position of the axis of the screw surface are determined by three independent quantities like, for instance, the chip flow angle and the radii of curvature of up-curl and side-curl at any point in the chip. Then, the shape and position of chip are determined definitely by these three quantities and the width and thickness of chip.<BR>(4) In practical cutting operation, various kinds of restriction on the chip flow give some of these three quantities.
