The effect of granule compaction procedures of aluminum nitride on the properties of green body and the resultant ceramics were examined. Aluminun nitride granules were uniaxially pressed, and then three kinds of pressing procedures were applied. As a result, the fracture strength of sintered body was changed depending on CIP and dewaxing procedures. Higher pressure of CIP resulted in higher fracture strength of ceramics. However, the fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of ceramics did not change with the compaction procedures as long as the microstructure and density of ceramics were the same. The difference in fracture strength was caused by the size of defects in the sintered body, which was observed through the thinned specimen in transmission mode of optical microscope. The defect size changed with the CIP/dewaxing procedures as well as the pressure of CIP. Since the dewaxed granules had higher compressive strength than the waxed granules, the larger defects within the ceramics occurred when the dewaxing of green body was conducted prior to CIP.
