When a reactor or a separation system with packed bed is designed, the estimation of pressure drop is of great concern. In the present work, the pressure drop in the bed in which fine Fe3O4 particles are suspended by magnetic force was studied. The experimental results showed that the magnetically suspended particle bed had a lower pressure drop than that predicted by Ergun's equation and it decreased with the increase in the strength of magnetic the field since the inhomogeneity of voids in the particle bed was enhanced with magnetic flux. The permeabilities in the bed were compared with those predicted by the model in which the inhomogeneous condition of the voids was considered. The results suggested that magnetic force is effective not only for suspending Fe3O4 particles but also for lowering the pressure drop in the bed.
