An investigation has been made about the effect of shot peening on the fatigue strength of decarburized 0.61%C carbon steel, of which the fatigue properties were measured with the cantilever rotating-beam fatigue testing machine. The results obtained may be summarized as follows:(1) The increment of surface hardness of decarburized steel due to shot peening amounted to approximately 40-60 in the micro-Vickers hardness number. These increments were due to work-hardening.(2) The surface roughness of specimen is deteriorated further because of shot peening as compared with that of the polished specimen, and its rate becomes greater as the decarburized depth increases.(3) In this experiment, the increment of fatigue limit of surface decarburized steel (0.15-0.5mm depth) due to shot peening is about 43-46%, and we can find that this effect of shot peening on the fatigue of metals is quite remarkable. The increasing rate becomes greater as the depth of decarburization becomes bigger.(4) The strengthing of fatigue limit of decarburized steel due to shot peening is about 9-12%, which is greater than that due to quenched and tempered treatment.(5) The above change of the fatigue strength caused by shot peening may be explaine as the combined effect of three factors, that is, compressive internal stress and work-hardening in the surface zone work together to increase the fatigue strength, and accordingly, the roughening of the surface which is to cause the decrease of the fatigue strength.
