Usually thermal deterioration test of an electrical insulating material requires very long time. It is desirable to improve the method of testing for thermal deterioration so that we may get a final result in a short time near the operating temperature. We appiled a gas analysis method using a mass spectrometer to thermal deterioration test of insulating materials and found that time required for the testing had been shortened considerably. Samples supplied for the test, were kraft pulp and kraft paper ordinarily used for high voltage condenser. 10gr of each sample was heated for two hours in vacuum, in oxygen or in argon. The gas evolved by thermal decomposition was analyzed by a mass spectrometer. Among the sort of gasses evolved, Co and Co2 were found in quantities. The results obtained are as follows;(1) A plot of the logarithm of the pressure of CO2+CO evolved by thermal decomposition versus the reciprocal of the absolute temperature gives a straight line.(2) The gas evolved in thermal decomposition is most abundant in oxygen and less in argon gas.(3) Discrimination of the difference in thermal deterioration characteristcs of various kraft papers having different density was possible.(4) In the deterioration test of kraft pulp, the result of method using a mass spectrometer agreed well with the result of weighing method. These experimental results show that the method of thermal deterioration test using a mass spectrometer enable us to know the deterioration rate of insulating material in short time at operating temperature. Moreover by this method we can study the deterioration mechanism of insulating materials.
