HPV (human papilloma virus) infection of the uterine cervix was studied by cytology and histology.
1) In mass screening program of Saga prefecture during 1985-86, 48 cases (0.06%) of koilocytotic atypia were detected from 81, 995 smear specimens.
2) Koilocytosis was noticed on histological specimens of 21 out of 41 patients with borderline lesions of the uterine cervix, who were treated at Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Saga Medical School. Koilocytosis prevailed more in mild or moderate dysplasia than in severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ.
3) As cytological manifestation of HPV infection, koilocytosis was far commonly observed in histological section than in cytological specimen, and dyskeratosis was vice versa. This fact suggests that koilocytosis on cytological specimen taken with cotton swab is not sensitive indicator for HPV infection.
