Background. 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is reported to be useful for the detection of various malignant tumors. We report a case of recurrent lung cancer successfully detected by FDG-PET. Case. A 65-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for investigation of elevated serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level. She had previously undergone surgery for lung cancer and gastric cancer in 2000. Chest CT scan revealed a crescent-shaped density on the 10th vertebral body while a whole-body FDG-PET demonstrated an area of abnormal uptake behind the right atrium of the heart. Although it was difficult to determine whether the lesion was intra-or extra-pulmonary, the patient underwent surgery. A lesion was found in the right S10 and a partial resection of the right lower lobe was therefore performed. Pathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed a diagnosis of recurrent lung cancer. Conclusion. Whole-body FDG-PET is useful for the detection of metastatic or recurrent lesions as well as primary lesions of lung cancer.
