Adhesion molecules were investigated in 48 cases of lung cancer, using an immunohistochemical technique.CD44, VLAβ1 and ICAM-1 were expressed in tumor cells, but other 8 adhesion molecules were largely absent.Adhesion molecules were present on the cell surface.CD44 and VLAβ1 were detected in 33 (69%) cases, and ICAM-1 was detected in 20 (42%) cases. The analysis of immunochemical data revealed that the positive cases for ant-CD44 mAb and ant-VLAfil mAb were significantly associated with lymh node metastasis (CD44: p<0.002, VLAβ1: p<0.05).Positivefindings for more than two mAbs showed even greather significant association. Our findings suggest that several adhesion molecules involving CD44 and VLAβ1 play an important role in lymphatic metastasis.
