Comparison of resected and non-resected cases of roentgenographically occult bronchogenic squamous cell carcinoma.

Results of treatment of 118 cases with roentgenographically occult lung cancer, all squamous cell carcinoma, were studied. Of these, 94 were resected and 16 of these were <I>in situ</I> carcinoma. Seventy-six cases were proved to be early stage squamous cell carcinoma, i.e. they did not penetrate beyond the bronchial wall and were free from stage metastasis. Neither recurrence nor metastasis was observed in early stage squamous cell carcinoma.<BR>Multiple primary lung cancer was observed in 20 cases (16.9%) of 118 roentgenographically occult lung cancer. The 5-year-survival rate, including all causes of death, of 94 resected cases was 80.4%, compared to 45.0% in non-resected cases.
