Significance of erythrocyte and serum zinc levels in lung cancer patients.

Erythrocyte- and serum-zinc levels of 64 lung cancer patients were measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Zinc levels in erythrocytes of advanced lung cancer patients were found to be significantly higher than those of normal adults, whereas serum zinc levels were lower. No differences in carbonic anhydrase levels in erythrocytes were observed. Heparinized saline by which erythrocytes were washed contained approximately I% of the entire erythrocyte zinc concentration. It was concluded that zinc accumulates in erythrocytes, and excessive and mobile zinc could affect zinc kinetics and distribution.
