An 88-year-old woman was admitted with a complaint of chest pain. Chest X-ray showed abundunt pleural effusion. Malignant findings were not detected by cytology of the pleural effusion or needle biopsy of the pleurae. She died of respiratory failure about 4 months after admission. Autopsy examination revealed sarcomatous mesothelioma spreading on the left parietal and visceral pleurae. Asbestos bodies and round ferosinous bodies were detected in the lung tissue. Several tiny nodular metastases were detected in the left hilar lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. The patient had had several jobs which had a risk of asbestos exposure (i. e. a tile maker, a roadmender, and a housemother of an airplane factory dormitory).
