Experimental and clinical treatment with cisplatin (CDDP) into the pleural cavity for carcinomatous pleurisy.:into the Pleural Cavity for Carcinomatous Pleurisy

To evaluate the effectweress of cisplatin as a sclerosing agent for carcinomatous pleurisy, we studied histological changes of rabbit pleura induced by cisplatin, the pharmacokinetics of cisplatin in carcinomatous pleurisy and the clinical response. In an experiment with rabbits, cisplatin was sufficiently useful as a pleuro-stimulating substance. The clinical study showed that a high concentration of total-CDDP was maintained over a long period (T1/2β=60.5 hours) in the pleural cavity. Treatment was effective in 14 of 19 patients (73%) and the mean survial time was 220.3 days. In conclusion administration of cisplatin into the pleural cavity was found to be effective for carcinomatous pleurisy. In addition, no marked side effect was noted.
