In vivo measurement of electrical bio-impedance in pulmonary masses.

The electrical bio-impedance of 57 pulmonary mass including 44 lung cancers, 5 metastatic lung tumors, 4 organizing pneumonias and 4 tuberculomas were measured in vivo with a triple-electrode method in the frequency range of 0 to 200 KHz. The tripleelectrode consisted of coaxial needle electrodes inserted into the tumor, lung and muscle and a large reference electrode on lower legs.<BR>The tissue can be regarded electrically as an equivalent consisted of extracellular resistance (Re), intracellular resistance (Ri), and electric capacitance of the cell membrance (C). It was found that the Re and Ri values of malignant tumors were significantly higher than those of organizing pneumonia (P<0.01) and the C value of malignant tumor was significantly lower than that of organizing pneumonia (P<0.01). It was found that the Re and Ri values of lung were significantly higher than that of pulmonary masses and muscles (P<0.01). The measurement of the electrical impedance of tumors in vivo may be useful for differential diagnosis of tumors and confirmation of the location of the needle tip when needle biopsy is made.
