The results of treatment were reviewed in a total of 50 patients with brain metastases from lung cancer encountered at our clinic between 1982 and 1987.
Thirty eight patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) included 17 patients who were treated by surgical resection of brain metastases, 12 patients treated by whole brain irradiation with more than 30 Gy, 5 patients treated by chemotherapy and 4 patients with no treatment. Twelve patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) included 8 patients who were treated by WBI with more than 30 Gy and 4 patients with no treatment.
The overall median survival time (MST) was 32 weeks, and the 1-year survival rate was 31%. MST of 17 patients who were treated by surgical resection was 45 weeks and that of 12 patients were treated by whole brain irradiation was 35 weeks in patients with NSCLC. In 9 of 17 patients who were treated by surgical resection of brain metastases curative resection of the primary lung lesion had been performed previously and the MST of these patients was 68 weeks. The MST of 8 patients with SCLC who were treated by whole brain irradiation was 51 weeks.
Our results suggested that surgical resection of brain metastases was effective in NSCLC cases, especially when the primary lesion had been well controlled, and that whole brain irradiation of brain metastases in SCLC cases improved MST.
