Successful trial of local LAK therapy combined with pleuropneumonectomy for pleuritis carcinomatosa: A case report of a patient with adenocarcinoma of the lung.

Adenocarcinoma in the left lower lobe of the lung with pleural effusion was diagnosed in a 55-year old woman. First, we treated the pleuritis carcinomatosa by intrapleural injection of autologous lymhokine-activated killer (LAK) cells with IL-2, resulting in disappearance of malignant cells and pleural effusion. Following cis-platin and Mitomycin C combination chemotherapy, left pleuropneumonectomy was performed.<BR>The histological examination of the resected pleura revealed remaining malignant cells, showing the importance of combination systemic therapy in addition to local LAK therapy.
