A 57 year-old male experienced eyelid edema in 1969 as the presenting symptom of a superior vena cava syndrome which lasted for 14 years. As demonstrated by CT, a carcinoid arising in the mediastinum infiltrated through the mediastinum, to the right lung and superior vena cave. It further destroyed the sternum, forming a tumor the size of a child's head and causing marked edema of the upper part of the body. There was a balanced venous return from the upper half of the body due to the slow development of the tumor and good development of collateral blood circulation. Because of this, a fatal rise in intracranial pressure was avoided, resulting in long term survial.
