A case of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura producing colony stimulating factor.

A case of malignant pleural mesothelioma producing colony stimulating factor (CSF) was reported. A 63 year-old Japanese male was admitted complaining of dry cough and slight fever. Chest roentgenogram showed tumor-like shadows in the left apical and lower lung fields. The white blood cell count gradually increased to 130, 000/mm<SUP>3</SUP>, and correlated with the increase in tumor bulk. Leukocytosis was due to the increase in mature neutrophilic granulocytes. The Philadelphia chromosome was absent. Histological examination of the autopsy specimen showed malignant mesothelioma of the pleura. CSF was detected both in the patient's serum and in medium conditioned with the tumor tissue. These results indicated that the tumor tissue produced CSF in vivo.
