Out of eleven early squamous cell lung carcinomas which were confined within the bronchial wall, five cases originating in 3rd to 5th order bronchi were reported.
The mode of growth of these five cases resembled that of central type early lung cancer. Three cases were polypoid type tumors, which seemed to be detected more easily than other types in the early stage because of appearance of symptoms and abnormal findings on chest roentgenograms.
The remaining two cases (nodular infiltrating type) were chromate workers detected by periodic sputum cytology despite roentgenologically negative findings. One (Case 4) of these two roentgenologically occult cancer was a genuine occult cancer which originated in the bronchus beyond the visible range of the bronchofiberscope.
