Forty cases of primary lung cancer were studied by 133 Xe-Radiospirometry. From the ventilation distribution (V%), volume distribution (V%) and perfusion distribution (Q%) to the involved hemithorax we produced a tentative nomogram to predict the number of obstructed subsegments on the assumption that 133 Xe distributed equally in each subsegment.
The number of subsegmental obstructions predicted with V %, V % or Q % correlated significantly with the bronchographically observed number of subsegmental obstructions, irrespective of the location of the lesion.
This nomogram was found to be useful to detect the extention of lung cancer, though there was a tendency to slightly overestimate lesions in the upper lobe and underestimate lesions in the lower lobe.
