The light absorption spectrum of radioactive methyl iodide vapor in the air was studied to clarify photolysis of radioactive methyl iodide by sunlight, which is a major factor in chemical form change of radioiodine in the environment.<BR>The reaction vessels containing radioactive methyl iodide vapor(6×10-7g/cm3, 0.3mCi/g)and air were exposed to monochromatic light of a specific wavelength in the region of 180-400nm. The rates of methyl iodide photodissociation and elemental iodine production were measured by Maypack sampler and gas chromatograph. The light absorption spectrum of methyl iodide was determined from these data.<BR>The absorption coefficient of radioactive methyl iodide had maxima at wavelengths 200 and 260nm respectively and a minimum at 220nm; the absorption coefficient decreased rapidly with increasing wavelength beyond 260nm. There was no effect of air as medium on the absorption spectrum.
