The growth of the diameter of the second metacarpal cortex is discussed on the basis of the chronological and TW2 skeletal ages in 49 male and 61 female Hottentot children aged 3 to 17 years from Warmbad, Namibia (South West Africa) and 124 boys and 113 girls aged 1 to 21 years of related populations, the Rehoboth Basters of Namibia and Cape Coloreds from Cape Town, South Africa. In this series, cortical thickness is generally greater in the females than in the males and also greater in the Rehoboth Basters than in the Hottentots. American Whites and Blacks show the greatest values in cortical thickness and the Hottentots the smallest among the four populations. The Hottentot-related populations are intermediate between the Americans and Hottentots. Radial ratio and the index of cortical thickness/bone length are somewhat greater in the American Whites than in the American Blacks. In these relative values also, the Hottentots show the smallest values among the four populations, but the Rehoboth Basters are not much different from the American Blacks.
