Six male students performing a standardized exercise were studied in the following conditions: (1) 15°C/50 % R. H. (cool condition), (2) 20°C/50 % R. H. (comfortable condition), (3) 35°C/30 % R. H. (warm-dry condition), and (4) 35°C/80%R. H. (warm-humid condition). The exercise consisted of pedaling a bicycle ergometer for 20 minutes at moderate work load followed by a 4-minutes period of heavy work. Pulmonary ventilation, oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide elimination and heart rate were recorded continuously during work and recovery. Oxygen uptake was significantly higher in warm-dry condition than in cool and comfortable conditions. Pulmonary ventilation was higer in warmhumid condition than in other conditions. Heart rate was also higher in warmhumid condition than in the other three conditions. The effects of the humidity at high temperature were more marked in recovery period than during work. The ratio of total oxygen cost above rest to total cardiac cost above 20°Crest was significantly lower in warm-humid condition than in cool and comfortable conditions. The linear relationship was evident between the Oxford Index of the environment and total cardiac cost during work and recovery.
