Image Analysis of Anisotropic Development of a Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Leaf in Relation to Temperature Effect on the Leaf Form.

Image processing was applied to analysis of the leaf form in lettuce (<I>Lactuca sativa</I> L.) as affected by air temperatures. Thirty eight spots were marked on upper surface of a young lettuce leaf (35 mm length), and the plants were grown under air temperatures of 15, 20 and 25°C. Displacement of respective spot centroides was traced in course of time by image analysis, and the relative growth rates were calculated by employing the mathematical method in fluid dynamics.<BR>The leaf developed broadwise at 15°C and developed longwise at 25°C, and finally clear differences was found in leaf form between air temperatures of 15 and 25°C. From the results of the two dimensional analysis of the relative growth rates of the leaves grown at different temperatures, it could be conceivable that the leaf form is characterized by the anisotropic development on the leaf basal side.
