This research was conducted for the purpose of experimentally clarifying how poor nutrient conditions, especially the lack of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, affect the resistance of turfgrass against sulphur dioxide. No-shiba (Zoysia japonicaSteud.) and Seaside bentgrass (Agrostis palustrisHuds.) were used as the test samples. They were planted in sand beds prepared with different nutrient conditions for 30 days. Then they were put in growth cabinet for pollution test and contaminated with 3 ppm of sulphur dioxide under a fixed temperature (20°C) for 3 hours. Then their damages were observed. Experiments were twice, in summer and in winter.
The results obtained are summarized as follows :
(1) The differences made on the resistance against sulphur dioxide by the various nutrient conditions were generally great in summer. The resistance of the turfgrasses grown in complete nutrients and potassium dificiency section was strong, it in phosphorus dificiency section was comparatively weak, it in nitrogen dificiency section was the weaker, and it in no-nutrient section was the weakest. In winter, the differences were hardly recognized.
(2) As for the damage from sulphur dioxide, it is seldom that No-shiba is sufferer. On the other hand, Seaside bentgrass showed big damages in summer. Especially, the damage of the bentgrass was the greatest in poor conditions.
