Zoysia minima, indigenous plant to New Zealand, is expected to produce fine turf, but its morphological characteristics and cross compatibility with other Zoysia species is unknown. The leaf length and width of Z. minima are smaller than Z. tenuifolia. The transverse section of leaf blade indicates a C-type of leaf edge with a large vascular bundle (scissor-type at both sides) . This species has 1 floret for 1 spike unlikely to other Zoysia species. The time of flowering was mainly observed from early November to early December, which is similar to that of Z. tenuifolia. This species is protogyny as well as other Zoysia species, and there seems to be a high possibility of self pollination, since the anther appears before the pistil changes to brown. In addition, the chromosome number of this species was 2n=40 as in other Zoysia species. Since pollen of Z. japonica and Z. matrella germinated on stigma of Z. minima, they were cross compatible. The 10 hybrid plants were obtained in crossing between Z. minima and 3 species of Zoysia.
