Microfloras in the soils under the bentgreen (sandy) and the zoysiagreen (volcanic ashy) were studied.
Their B/F values were so high that they could be said to be "Bacteria rich soils".
A soil conditioner containing vinegar (acetic acid), chitosan hydrolyzates and extract of alfalfa leaves improved the microfloras in soils of both bentgreen and zoysiagreen. That is to say, in the soils treated with the soil conditioner, actinomycetes, chitinase-producing bacteria including actinomycetes, gram-negative bacteria and fluorescent pseudomonads increased significantly as compared with non-treated soil or soil treated only with TPN. Treatments of TPN to the turfs in no way influenced microflora, but it decreased fungi belonging to the genus Fusarium.
Decrease of the fungi belonging to the genus Fusarium was also recognized in the soil treated with the soil conditioner. The decrease of the fungi would seem to be indirectly promoted by increases of actinomycetes, chitinase-producing bacteria including actinomycetes, gramnegative bacteria and fluorescent pseudomonads, which produce antibiotics and enzymes which dissolve the fungal cell-wall components.
In those microbially improved soils, where effective bacteria increased and pathogenic fungi were controlled in lower levels, the effect of TPN would be enhanced the effective turf control with the soil conditioner and fungicides is then recommended.
