Fungi were isolated from sods obtained from a bentgrass turf of a golf course by a direct isolation method and a dilution plate method using selective media for the respective target fungi. By the direct isolation method, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Pythium, and Curvularia were obtained form thatch. The latter two fungi were isolated from leaves and stems of turfgrass and other fungi except Rhizoctonia from roots. However, by the dilution plate method only Curvularia was isolated from all parts of turfgrass, thatch, and soil. These results show that fungi detected from sods are largely dependent on the isolation methods applied even if selective media are used for the respective target fungi. Total numbers of fungi. Curvularia, and bacteria isolated from sods stocked at either 4 or 20°C were examined by the dilution plate method using selective media. The results suggested that fungi should be isolated within 3 days after the onset of stock of sods at 4°C, because total numbers of fungi are readily fluctuated within 3 days at 20°C or 7 days at 4°C. Although total numbers of bacteria were fluctuated within 3 days after the onset of stock even if sods were stocked at 4°C, this fluctuation did not seem to affect the population of fungi in sods for at least 3 days.
