A hemodialysis patient underwent a hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy for bilateral renal cell carcinomas associated with acquired cystic disease of kidney (ACDK)

We report a hemodialysis patient who underwent hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy for bilateral renal cell carcinomas associated with acquired cystic kidney disease of kidney (ACDK). The patient was a 44-year-old asymptomatic male with a 14-year history of hemodialysis. Follow-up computed tomography (CT) of the kidney at our outpatient department demonstrated a mass lesion with ACDK in the bilateral kidneys. Enhanced CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated tumor-like lesions with enhancement in the bilateral kidneys. We diagnosed the patient as having synchronous renal cell carcinomas in the bilateral kidneys with ACDK. The patient underwent hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy for bilateral renal cancer. The pathological diagnosis for all tumors was renal cell carcinoma, grade 2, INFα, v (-), pT1a. The patient has remained well without evidence of recurrence or distant metastasis 24 months post operatively.
