Studies of the ecology and behavior of ayu stocked into rivers in Japan depend on being able to recognize the stocked fish. Based on a review of parasitological literature, we suggest that the anisakid nematode Raphidascaris gigi and the proteocephalid cestode Proteocephalus plecoglossi, both of which are endemic to the Lake Biwa basin, may be used as natural markers to differentiate ayu of Lake Biwa origin from the native (amphidromous) and/or hatchery-stocked population (s) of the same species in rivers. Since R. gigi remains as a larva in the abdominal cavity of the fish, this nematode is expected to serve as a very useful biological tag for the entire period between the time of stocking and the host's death.
