In the pen shell, Atrina (Servatrina) lischkeana, ventilation and respiration were observed before and during feeding on micro algae, Chaetoceros glacilis (26, 519 cell/ml), measuring ventilation volume, oxygen utilization and amount of oxygen uptake. During feeding, the pen shell showed a 38-fold increase in ventilation volume due to a change in the ventilation from an intermittent patten to a continuous pattern. However, the amount of oxygen uptake increased only 1.2-fold. Before and during feeding, inhalation and exhalation of sea water from/into the mantle cavity was completely synchronized. Based on findings, the pen shell was supposed switching the ventilation in the feeding from an intermittent pattern to a continuous pattern.
