Relationship between coelomic pressure and ventilation in the respiratory tree of the Japanese common sea cucumber, <I>Apostichopus japonicus</I> was examined. Inhalation volume per ventilation (Vg-in) and inhalation period per ventilation increased with increase of inhalation frequency per ventilation (If) . However, the minimum and maximum values of coelomic pressure (Pco) per ventilation, and ventilation volume per min (Vg) were constant. And the exhalation and inhalation from/into the respiratory tree started when Pco increased in 7.9-8.1 mmH2O and decereased in 3.5-4.0 mmH2O, respectively. The ventilation stopped when the body wall was strongly pushed, and resumed when Pco was lowered in 7.6-7.8 mmH2O. From the results, the sea cucumber should be proven that Vg maintains constant, even if the size of body changes, by adjusting Vg-in to the fixed Pco (7.9-8.1 mmH2O) with If.
