We examined abnormal bone formations in hatchery reared bluefin tuna. For the study, 278 larvae of bluefin tuna were used from 1-26 days after hatching. Their total lengths were 3.5 mm to 31.1 mm. They were reared at Yaeyama Station of the Japan Sea-Farming Association in July and August 1996.<BR>Bone abnormalities were not observed in hatchlings younger than 14 days. The occurrence rate of bone abnormalities in 221 hatchlings older than 14 days was 61.5%. Abnormalities occurred at the following rates: 83.8%, dorsal pterygiophore; 12.5%, anal pterygiophore; 11.8%, centrum; 26.5%, neural spine; 20.6%, haemal spine; 17.6%, caudal skeleton and others; 7.4%. Abnormalities in the dorsal pterygiophore occurred frequently in the spine, and abnormalities in the anal pterygiophore occurred frequently in the first to the fifth of the soft rays and finlets. Abnormalities of the neural spine, haemal spine, and centrum occurred frequently in the 31st to the 37th centrum. Dorsal pterygiophore abnormalities often occurred with other symptoms.
