The utilization of different types of soybean meal (SBM) as partial replacement for fish meal in high energy diets was investigated with juvenile red sea bream, Pagrus major. The control diet contained 54% fish meal as the main protein source. Test diets were steam dry pellets containing SBM with or without extrusion processing at a level of 30%, and extruded soft-dry pellets containing 30% SBM (substitution of about 60% fish meal) . The protein content of SBM diets was reduced at several percent by replacement of fish meal with SBM. Fish weighing 8.9g and 6.0g on average were fed the experimental diets for 147 and 42 days, respectively.
All types of SBM diets were palatable to the fish. There were no marked differences in growth and feed gain ratio between the control and SBM diets, although slightly better performances were observed in the control groups of both fish sizes. This was probably due to the lower dietary protein content in SBM diets. The feed utilization of SBM diets was not improved by extrusion processing.
Thus, inclusion of 30% SBM, both unprocessed and processed by extruder, in high energy diets had no adverse effect on growth and feed performance of juvenile red sea bream.
