The practical inclusion levels of meat meal (MM) as a substitute for fish meal in mash for oregon moist pellet (OMP, mixed mash and raw sardine mince with 1: 1), was evaluated with yearling yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata fed test OMP diets composed of mashes containing 0-30% MM for 126 days.
Growth performance was maximal in the fish fed diet of mash containing 10% MM but decreased with further increase in MM content. The performance of fish fed diet of mash containing 30% MM was similar to that of fish fed diet of MM-free mash. The same trend was found in feed efficiency among the test groups.
Hematological characteristics (red blood cell count and mean corpuscular volume) of the fish fed diet of mash containing 30% MM were inferior to those of the fish fed diet of MM-free mash.
There were no marked differences in proximate compositions of muscle and liver among the groups.
These results indicate that commercial MM is a satisfactory alternative protein source of mash for OMP for yearling yellowtail. Practical inclusion levels of MM in the mash should be around 30%, replacing around 38% of fish meal in mash.
