Purified casein diets with and without supplemental pantothenic acid were fed to fingerling yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata in order to examine signs of pantothenic acid deficiency. Fish fed the basal diet containing 0.16 mg pantothenic acid/100g diet developed deficiency signs such as anorexia, poor growth, ataxia, clubbed gills and high mortality. After 13 days, half of the fish fed the basal diet were converted to the supplemental diet containing 28mg calcium d-pantothenate/100g diet. Deficiency signs in these fish were disappeared in 17 days. In a second experiment, graded levels of calcium d-pantothenate were added to casein diets and fed to fingerling yellowtail to determine their dietary requirement for pantothenic acid. Weight gain and liver pantothenic acid data indicated that the pantothenic acid requirement of fingerling yellowtail was 1.35-3.59 mg calcium d-pantothenate/100g diet.
