The present study was dealt with the effect of environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, pH, quality and quantity of light, and nutrients on the growth of useful attached diatom, <I>Cocconeis</I> sp., in the laboratory culture. The following results were obtained.<BR>The temperature and the salinity for optimal growth were 25°C and 29.4‰, respectively. The species optimally grew at pH 8.5. The relationship between light condition and growth was found to vary with quality and quantity of light. The optimal growth was under blue light with 100 μE/m2/s. In comparison with the culture in the standard artificial medium (ASP12) and that in the medium excluding any one of each nutrient element, it showed that the growth of the species especially decreased in the case of omission of NaNO3 and P II metals among nutrient elements.
