Reproductive ecology and spawning behavior of the wrass, <I>Halichoeres poecilopterus</I> (Pisces: Labridae) in a tank were described here. Parental fish consisted of 13 primary males, 21 secondary males, and 18 females. They were caught in Ago Bay, Mie Prefecture, from April 30 to May 31, 1987, then reared in a 10, 000<I>l</I>-capacity concrete tank of the Fisheries Research Laboratory Mie University until September 26, 1987.<BR>Spawning occurred continuously from June 3 to September 10. Water temperature ranged from 21.2 to 30.3°C during the spawning period. Spawning regularly took place in the morning, most frequently between 8: 00 and 9: 30.<BR>Three types of spawning behavior were observed. In pair spawning, a territorial terminal phase male followed a female and they spawned beneath the surface after rushing rapidly upward. In group spawning, a few unterritorial terminal phase males intruded into the territory and followed a female, then they spawned. In streaking, an unterritorial initial or terminal phase male spawned by joining the pair spawning just before the spawning rush.<BR>It is estimated that a female spawned about 40 times and laid about 380, 000 eggs during the spawning period.
