Epizootiology of bacterial kidney disease (BKD) was investigated in cultured coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch. During 1985 to 1989, total 2, 550 coho salmon cultured in fresh water or sea water were collected from 58 fish farms. In 1, 532 coho salmon cultured in fresh water, 8 samples showed the clinical signs of BKD, such as exophthalmia or abscesses in the kidney. Renibacterium salmoninarum antigen was detected in 264 samples using with indirect dot blot assay. The 635 coho salmon transferring from fresh water to sea water were examined and 160 samples were positive for R. salmoninarum antigen. Altogether, R. salmoninarum antigen was detected 33.6% in 383 fish cultured in sea water and 34 samples showed the clinical signs of BKD.
