A feeding trial was carried out for young yellowtail to evaluate several kinds of soybean meals as a partial substitute for fish meal in practical diets. As to dietary contents of a commercially available defatted soybean meal, fish fed diets containing up to 30% of soybean meal showed similar performance and body composition to fish fed a control high fish meal diet, though fish fed the 30 % soybean meal diet resulted in slightly inferior protein digestibility and low concentration of serum iron, phosphorus and zinc. Among four kinds of soybean meals (ordinary defatted meal, severely heated meal, amino acid-supplemented meal and purified meal), the best growth and feed efficiency were obtained in fish fed the diet with purified meal, while similar and inferior performance was found in fish fed the diet with amino acid-supplemented and severely heated meals, respectively. These results indicate that commercial defatted soybean meal can substitute for fish meal up to 30 % in diets for young yellowtail, moreover purified soybean meal such as soy protein concentrate is a better protein source.
