The efficiency of two types of culture system, artificial ecosystem and routine culture, on the growth of rotifer and in maintenance of water quality was observed on the basis of nitrogen budget. In the latter system, waste water obtained from rotifer culture by rotifer harvesting, was returned directly into culture water. Marine algae, <I>Nannochloropsis</I> sp. and baker's yeast were both supplied as input food at the rate of 0.35 dry-μg/indiv. /day.<BR>In the artificial ecosystem, 64% of the total nitrogen supplied was contributed from the input food and 26% was from recycling <I>Nannochloropsis</I> sp., which was cultured with regeneralized nutrients from rotifer culture medium. While, other 10% of the nitrogen was from the culture medium of recycling <I>Nannochloropsis</I> sp. as remaining dissolved nitrogen.<BR>In the artificial ecosystem culture, 40% of the total nitrogen was used for rotifer growth. While, the remaining was found as dissolved nitrogen, biodeposits, and desorpted nitrogen through aeration at percentages of 38, 21, and 1, respectively. It was also calculated that, 63 and 41% of nitrogen from the input food was used for rotifer growth and <I>Nannochloropsis</I> sp., respectively.<BR>On the other hand, in the routine rotifer culture, percentage of nitrogen found as rotifer growth and dissolved nitrogen was calculated at 40 and 38, respectively. Thirteen and nine percents became biodeposits and desorpted nitrogen through aeration, respectively.<BR>The efficiency of artificial ecosystem culture was indicated by the high conversion percentage from input to rotifer growth. In addition, water quality in artificial ecosystem culture was proved better, as the concentration of total dissolved nitrogen in culture tank on final day was 510, tg-at/l compared to 4, 270μg-at/l in routine system.
