Diets of the Adult Ayu Plecoglossus altivelis in the Kano and Sakawa Rivers in the Central Honshu

The Ayu Plecogrossus altivelis in the Kano river in Shizuoka Prefecture and the Sakawa river in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is observed to graze principally on the following two groups of algae, diatoms such as Achnanthes, Navicula, Fragilaria, Gomphonema, Synedra, Nitzschia, Cymbella, Cocconeis, Rhoicosphenia, Ceratoneis, Cyclotella, Epithemia, Melosira, Diatoma and Surirella and blue green algae such as Phormidium, Oscillatoria, Lyngbya, Chroococcus, Gloeotrichia, Anabena and Coelodpherium. Blue green algae dominate in most cases. Exceptionally, the fish is found omnivorous, feeding on diptera larvae particularly in its spawning season.
